White space is a term of art referring to any portion of a physical or digital page that is left unmarked.  This includes margins, gutters, paragraph breaks, column divisions, and the space around and between graphics and illustrations.

These areas are not necessarily white, but they are traditionally left empty.  Because white space is characterized by the lack of content, it is sometimes known as negative space.

In order to start the design process, your web developer will need to receive a few materials before getting started. I’m talking about actual files and internal documents… not the business discussion that should have already happened.

What do you need to prepare?

1. Your logo. If you already have a professionally designed logo, you will need to provide it as a vector-based file. This is typically an Adobe Illustrator file. A jpeg or gif won’t work because they have already been compressed and can’t be re-sized. They might also have a background color that conflicts with the new web design.

With the increase in good stock imagery and the decrease of its cost, I get asked the question of whether or not a professional photographer is needed all the time.

In my opinion, there is absolutely no doubt that a professional photographer will provide a much higher value than stock imagery in terms of quality. I think all of us can tell when images are stock or when they come from an amateur’s digital camera and can appreciate the work of the professional. The question really becomes one of budget.
