Too busy to write text for your website?

Too busy to write text for your website?

Mar 24, 2009 by Marissa Berger

Small business owners share the same problem when it comes to content: they are too busy to write it themselves but they are the only ones who know enough about the company and its products or services. They’re even too busy to work with a professional writer and allocate a few hours a week until their input/help is no longer needed.

So what are these business owners to do?

First, do hire a professional writer. I have been part of way too many projects where business owners want to save money and decide to write the content themselves… only to delay the launch of the site by months. Imagine the opportunity cost of not having a website for all that time!

Second, talk… don’t write. The process of putting our thoughts in writing is hard. We start worrying about how to write properly (spelling and grammar) instead of content. In complete contrast, talking about our business is easy. If you are passionate about what you do, you probably have the problem of talking too much instead of talking too little.

So… think interview! Schedule a meeting with your writer… a long meeting; a working meeting. Have him or her interview you and ask you as many questions as you can answer in the alloted time. Record the session. You will find that it’s much, much easier to allocate one chunk of time to this that a little each day or week to writing. It’s also much easier to talk and have the writer worry about spelling and grammar; and tone and voice; and web formats and so on.

If this interview session is planned well, you will only need to approve drafts or even delegate those approvals to your team. You can even do this interview over the phone!

Finally, think outside the box. If you are better at talking at 5 a.m. or midnight, then record yourself and send the recordings to your writer. If you only have evenings or weekend available, schedule a phone interview then. Basically, forget about writing and think about how you talk about your business the easiest and work around that.
